Google Play is looser than the App Store about screenshot dimensions — and that flexibility trips people up. Uploads succeed at almost any size, but listings only become eligible for featuring and search promotion when the assets meet Google's stricter quality bar. This is the full spec sheet for 2026, followed by the sizes we recommend exporting from a mockup tool.
The 2026 spec sheet
| Asset | Required | Recommended for featuring |
|---|---|---|
| Phone screenshots | 2–8 images, 320–3840 px per side | 1080 × 1920 minimum, 9:16 |
| 7" tablet screenshots | Up to 8 images | 1080 px+ shortest side |
| 10" tablet screenshots | Up to 8 images | 1080 px+ shortest side |
| Feature graphic | 1024 × 500, required for video | Keep text inside the centre safe area |
| App icon | 512 × 512, 32-bit PNG | No transparency tricks — Play masks it |
| Format | JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha) | PNG for UI, JPEG for photo scenes |
Two rules cause most rejections. First, the maximum dimension of a screenshot can't be more than twice the minimum dimension — a very tall stitched panorama will bounce. Second, the feature graphic is mandatory the moment you add a promo video, because Play uses it as the video poster frame.
Why 1080 × 1920 is the number that matters
Google's featuring guidelines ask for at least 1080 px on the shortest side and a clean 16:9 or 9:16 ratio. Listings below that bar still publish, but they are quietly excluded from most editorial placements and from the large-format cards in search results. Since those placements are free acquisition, there is no reason to submit less.
The mockup workflow that fits the spec
- 01Export your app screens at 2x from Figma — a 360 × 800 Android frame becomes 720 × 1600, enough to fill a 3D device screen without upscaling.
- 02Drop each screen into a phone mockup and add a short headline above the device — the same first-two-screenshots rule that applies on the App Store applies here.
- 03Set the export canvas to 9:16. MochiMockup's free tier renders at 2K, which comfortably clears the 1080 px featuring bar.
- 04Export PNG for crisp UI, then convert to JPEG only if you need to shave upload size — Play re-compresses either way.
- 05Reuse the composition at 1024 × 500 for the feature graphic, cropping the device to the right so the left half stays free for your tagline.
Google Play vs App Store: the differences that matter
| Rule | Google Play | Apple App Store |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot count | 2–8 per device type | 1–10 per localisation |
| Fixed resolutions | No — ranges with a featuring bar | Yes — 1290 × 2796 for 6.7" iPhone |
| Feature graphic | 1024 × 500, required with video | Not used |
| Alpha channel | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| Review strictness | Automated, lenient | Human review, strict |
If you ship on both stores, design once at 9:16 with generous margins, then export the Apple set at their fixed 1290 × 2796 slot and the Play set at 1080 × 1920 or higher. One mockup scene, two exports — the layouts survive both crops.
